Space Battles: Beginner and Advanced
If you have not visited our Basic Helm page, Advanced Helm, Combat Rules, or General Sim Guide you may wish to
do so before continuing.
The below is a general overview for the beginner and the more advanced.
Beginners

called the sublight
|

Used for manuevering and for lift off
|
Location(with respect to your ship):
Aft
|
Behind
|
Foreward
|
Toward the bow or front of the ship
|
Port
|
Left
|
Starboard
|
Right
|
Types of motion of ship (not usually
desired ;o) ):
Roll
|
Rotation about the x-axis
|
Pitch
|
Rotation about the y-axis
|
Yaw
|
Rotation about the z-axis
|
Beginners, think
of trying to shoot at another ship as being divided into three parts.
Before-you-fire
|
You need to be concerned about how to find the enemy
ship with your sensors, what weapon you will use, what you want to hit on
the other ship, how you get to a good spot to shoot at another ship, targeting
the ship and getting a target lock on the ship.
|
Firing
|
Just like it sounds, shooting at the enemy ship.
Remember to make targeting and firing two separate actions. Please see Dice
for more rules on this.
|
After you fire
|
You will want to get out of harms way because it
is likely that the enemy ship will try to fire at you immediately after
you fired at it. After getting out of the way you should repeat the process
until the enemy is as damaged as you intended. So go back for another shot
and repeat the process until you are done or unable to complete your mission!

Advanced
Stages of Combat
The more experienced
simmer may wish to think of a space combat in five parts:
1.Detection and Identification - This is exactly
what it sounds like. It is the time where you have located something on your
scanners and have identified it as a viable target.
Related Terminology:
Target Acquistion - The time period while you
are trying to lock onto your target before firing. This includes the use
of targetting scanners. This phrase is also used when you have locked onto
your target.Ex: "Captain I have target acquisition."
Passive scanning - Type of scan as a spectrum
with a receiver that does not emit anything. Passive scanning makes it
harder to pinpoint your location but gives less detail of your surroundings
Active scanning -Type of scan that gives the
most detail but can help the enemy identify your postion more easily. Particles,
energy or sound is emitted to help pinpoint location by reflecting it back
from the object being scanned. Using this can help the enemy lock
onto your postion better with their targetting scanners
2. Closing - The time period right after the decision is made to engage.
You attempt to find the most advantageous position to carry out your attack.
Please see the section "Advanced or Fighter Pilot Terms and Manuevers "
for more details.
3. Attack - Exactly what it sounds like. The stage where you decide to
attack your opponent or vice versa. Key elements are the tactical situation,
situational awareness, and specific capabilites of each vessel.
4. Manuever - Vessels fight each other for the best position
for attack or escape.
5. Disengagement - The final stage where the attack is ended either through
a successful termination of the target or through withdrawal.
