Ensign Cassandra Nova was able
to discern more about the aliens who brought us to the wormhole and something
about another set of aliens. She learned and told Dr Sullivan that the aliens
that brought us through the wormhole were trying to get back home and to
stop or kill " The Great Evil" . This "Great Evil" "eats" and destroys worlds
and civilizations. As is the case with all enigmatic aliens, especially
of the incorporeal sort, we learn things that make no sense to us the first
time we hear it. We are told that the appetite for destruction of their enemy
is so intense that it seems to "hunger to eat". The other enigmatic concept
was that the "Evil" is like an automated snowball getting bigger and
bigger as it rolls down hill. Of course these are all the perceptions
or stories the aliens that have abducted us through the wormhole are
telling. What is the whole story?
As you know a particularly nasty
something found the Away Team that was sent out to investigate a mysterious
ancient wreck. This something was a large yellow cellular slime mold attacked
LTjg Yajiru.
LCDR Unstoffe gambled (and won the mustard
jelly covered pretzel ) that since the slime mold existed/developed in oxygen
nonexistent to poor conditions that it was anaerobic and that pure O2 might
poison it. He unfastened the O2 hose from Ensign Valderkev's suit and used
it to spray the slime mold. It worked! Part of the slime mold quivered, quaked,
jiggled and died making horrible noises in its death throw. Another
but smaller part mold jiggled and slithered away. That having worked, the
CSEC used the O2 on a second slime mold that rounded a corner to attack.
He was successful again, killing part of the slime mold but the rest
of it broke off and slithered away.
Ensign Valderkev suggested that restoring
life support could eliminate our mold problem. The Captain cautioned that
given the condition and age of the wreck anything was possible including
a set up that might find the introduction of O2 an explosive situation.
The CO recommended that the bridge be checked for potential dangers of that
sort and if possible that life support be restored such that it could repel
the molds in the bridge area and other areas where major work needs to be
done. (Hey ! Do we know the vessel's occupants are/were oxygen breathers
yet? Perhaps they breathe sulfur or nitrogen or something else like the slime
mold?)
The Captain thought that we might be
able to mimic the way that slime molds communicate to each other and use
this to help us avoid the pesky mobile fungal beasties. Our astute CMO suggested
that we "might try to synthesize chemical markers for mold and coat
our suits . It won't know the difference between us and another mold."
Midshipman Richards extracted a sample
of the dead part of the slime mold for examination and analysis of our CMO.
After she did so part of the remainder of the slime mold began to move towards
her. Which is of course when I ended the sim. ;o)
(( Superb job everyone. Thank you very
much!))
In our upcoming episode...
What triggered the attack on our assistant
engineer?
How did a slime mold breach the suit?
Will it happen again?
Is Midshipman Richards the second choice for lunch for the slime mold?
Will CSEC ever eat a pretzel with mustard again? (Baldur's Gate joke for
him)
