How to Play an AMO (Assistant Medical Officer)

  STAR TREK SIM DOCTOR'S GUIDE TO INJURIES, DISEASES AND TREATMENT

"Adventures of the USS Eagle", our Star Trek sim game, is in need of people to play doctors and nurses. Please click on the link below to join or send a message requesting more information. Experience is most welcome but none is necessary.

Playing an AMO, Assistant Medical Officer, or a CMO, Chief Medical Officer, is both fun and rewarding.

There are a few basics that everyone should know who plays a doctor or a nurse.

You can break the process down into four steps:
1. Examine
2. Diagnose
3. Treat
4. Prognosis

Depending on the people you play with, it can be considered important or a sign of a good Star Trek doctor if you throw in a few words (or pages) of  tech babble at every step listed above. Links are provided below to help you find real world medical techbabble, specialized trekbabble and other  methods to be creative and invent your very own techbabble.

1. Examine
a. Visually inspect and scan
b. Ask patient and others what happened
c. Check for environmental clues
d. Look up tech and trek babble

The first thing you must do is examine the patient and ask for clues like symptoms. If the patient is conscious you can ask them for symptoms. If there is a witness you can ask them what happened.

A different level of description is given based on how you examine and your level.

For actions in our Star Trek RPG, you may type the following to get an action/description response from the GM/CO or simmer who plays the patient:

For the Beginner,

Action of Character
Description
::looks at patient::
DESCRIPTION: PATIENT IS A MALE HUMAN IN HIS MIDDLE TWENTIES. HE IS NOT BREATHING. HIS FACE IS PALE.
:: activates tricorder and directs it at the patient::
DESCRIPTION :  BROKEN LEG. BONE HAS SEVERED MAJOR ARTERIES AND VEINS. HEAVY INTERNAL BLEEDING AND BLOOD CLOTS.

For the Advanced Player,

Action of Character
Description
::looks at patient::
DESCRIPTION: PATIENT IS A MALE HUMAN IN HIS MIDDLE TWENTIES. HE IS NOT BREATHING. HIS FACE IS PALE.
:: activates tricorder and directs it at the patient::
DESCRIPTION : COMPLICATED FRACTURE OF THE LEFT FEMUR. SEVERED FEMORAL ARTERY. WEAKEND ILIAC ARTERY. THROMBOSIS.

Simmers could then IM the person running the scene or their department head to learn what it means or what to do if they had the need. The same scene can be run for the different levels of experience. On the USS Eagle we try to match these up with each simmer's level of experiences and interests. In this manner beginning and advanced players can sim together.

The amount of detail you give in looking will  help you get more detail for playing the part.

 If there is something covering the patient and you do not remove it, you may not learn information necessary to saving them...or yourself.

For example in the above for both levels of play...

Action of Character
Description/Action
::looks at patient::
DESCRIPTION: PATIENT IS A MALE HUMAN IN HIS MIDDLE TWENTIES. HE IS NOT BREATHING. HIS FACE IS PALE.
:: moves the rock off the patient::
ACTION: YOU SEE AN UNUSUAL PLANT.
::scans the plant::
: DESCRIPTION: IT IS TOXIC TO THE TOUCH.POSSIBLY THE REASON FOR UNCONSCIOUSNESS
