Anaphylactic Reactions
(Anaphylaxis)

Anaphylaxis is an acute violent allergic reaction that can be life threatening, causing respiratory distress and vascular collapse.

An allergin (antigen) enters the blood stream and reacts with an antibody of the immunoglobulin E ( IgE) class. The reaction causes immune inflamatory reations, including the production of histamine.

This reaction does not occur the first time the allergin is introduced.  The
antigen binds with immunoglobulin E that is attached to a  previously sensitized basophil (type of white blood cell) and masts cells. Mediators (histamine, leukotriene C4, prostaglandin D2, and tryptase) are then  released  very quickly causing a variety of symptoms and if serious and untreated can result in death. Please see below for more symptoms.

Types of Anaphyalaxis

Term
  Definiition/Cause
aggregate anaphylaxis
 injection of antigen
antiserum anaphylaxis
occurs in person with no allergies when  serum made from a person with allergies is injected
cutaneous anaphylaxis
strong skin reactions
indirect anaphylaxis
strong reaction to own antigen that has been altered
inverse anaphylaxis
caused by antibody instead of antigen

Anaphylactic Symptoms

Symptoms usually begin within two hours of exposure. Faster onset occurs if the allergen is injected into the blood stream.

Anaphylactoid Reactions

Anaphylactoid reactions are like anaphylactic ones but can occur the first time of exposure.  Since  IgE antibodies are not  involved, this is not considered to be an allergic reaction.
